Renewed hope in the global effort to eradicate cervical cancer
Cervical cancer has been recognized as being one of the principal cancer varieties that cause the highest deaths in women around the world. Thanks to the novel approaches that have been designed to prevent this disease i.e. HPV testing and vaccination, mankind may have finally developed the right techniques that will help in eradicating cervical cancer. HPV has been determined to be the leading cause of this type of cancer. This knowledge and the technologies at the disposal of the medical profession have reduced the threat of the disease significantly and its total eradication is certainly just a matter of time.
According to the World Health Organization, the number of women diagnosed with this disease annually is in the range of 500,000. Of these, approximately half the number succumbs to cervical cancer every year. One issue that is of particular concern is the fact that cervical cancer tends to be diagnosed in women who are relatively young.
Majority of the cervical cancer cases reported are attributed to the human papillomavirus or HPV. This virus is markedly common in many persons who are sexually active. Many people carry the virus without their knowledge and this has been attributed to the fact that it has the ability to maintain a dormant state for months or even a number of years. In the event that the person suffers from a persistent HPV infection then the chances of developing either cervical cancer or cervical disease are increased. The consolation here is that this cancer develops at a very slow rate and as such it can be preempted quite early if the cancerous cells are detected and remedied early.
